To keep your network secure, resetting or changing wifi passwords should be your monthly practice. If you are one of those prudent folks or one of those who are forgetful, this is the article for you!
We will first show you how to reset a Linksys router password if you already know the old one and then lead you through the steps to reset it if you don’t know it.
It will be easy, we promise!
How to Reset a Linksys Router Password
If you already know your old password, the process is relatively straightforward:
- Go to configuration, and then choose “wireless security”; you can set the password there. In this window, you can change both 2.5Ghz and 5Ghz passwords.
- If you want to change the guest password, go to the Guest Access field, just below the wireless security; you can navigate the guest password there.
However, most of us are forgetful with passwords, so how to reset a Linksys router password when you don’t know the old one?
Is resetting the router to its default settings the only answer?
You can no longer get your Linksys router’s password back if you changed it or forgot it. You must reset the router to its factory settings if you need the router password.
Is this the only way, or is there another alternative?
Well, sadly, yes, this is the only way. The good news is that resetting and setting it back up is not so complicated.
Methods for resetting a Linksys router password with a factory reset
First method
Turn off the router
Most Linksys routers have an automated on/off switch that activates when you plug them into an outlet.
Reset the router
You should press and hold the Reset button for 10 seconds after the Power light has begun to blink.
The Reset button is typically located at the router’s rear, close to the power cord, although depending on the model, this location may vary.
Older Linksys routers need to be reset by pressing and holding the reset button for 30 seconds.
Please turn off the router and turn it on again
Please wait 30 seconds after unplugging the router before plugging it back in to turn it back on. Power cycling is the term for this.
Keep watching until the Power light stops blinking. Turn the router off, wait 30 seconds, then turn it back on if the power light doesn’t stop blinking.
Connect the router to your computer
Utilize the router’s ethernet wire to connect it to a computer. The ethernet port light will turn on when an ethernet cable is used to connect it to a computer.
You must connect your modem and router. Plug your router into your modem after turning it off. Restart the modem once again.
The modem is currently attached to the PC, and the internet port is on your wall. The modem and router are linked. Just to note here, you shouldn’t connect the router to the computer.
Second method
Open a web browser. Go to the router’s management page. Type http://192.168.1.1/ in the address bar of your browser.
Type in the standard username and password. Enter admin in the User name area of the Linksys router administration screen when it loads. Type admin in the Password area.

Third method
Find the Username and Password areas on the Linksys setup page. Click the Setup tab, followed by the Basic tab, if you can’t see them.
In case you forget your login or password, make sure you write them down.
Head over to the MAC Address Clone tab. Then select MAC Address Clone from the Setup menu.
Media Access Control, or MAC for short, is the unique ID your cable internet service provider (ISP) uses to identify your modem.
Give the router the MAC address. Select Enabled from the radio buttons in the Mac Address Clone section. Click the MAC of My PC to Clone. Then click Save Settings.
Check the internet connection status
Click on the Status tab. Look up the IP address on the internet. It’s set up correctly if you see numbers other than 0.0.0.0. Otherwise, click Release IP Address before selecting Renew IP Address.
Switch the modem back on and forth if you still can’t connect to the internet. After that, restart the router.
Finally, power cycle the computer.
Contact your ISP if you’re still having problems connecting to the internet.
Fourth method
Type in your ISP login information. Select PPPoE from the drop-down selection for Internet Connection Type. Enter the ISP-provided username and password. Click Save Settings. If you don’t have the username and password your ISP provided, you’ll need to get in touch with them. Without these, your router won’t function properly.
Change the wireless network name
Next, click Basic Wireless Settings under the Wireless menu. Click Manual under Configuration View. Enter the wireless network’s name in the Wireless Network Name (SSID) field. Then click Save Settings.

Fifth method
Go to the Linksys Security page
After changing the physical router’s password, you must generate a username and password to access the wireless network. Click the Security tab on the Linksys administrator’s interface.
Choose a security option
After selecting the Wireless option, select the Wireless Settings tab. Click the Manual radio button next to Configuration View.
Scroll down until you find the Wireless Security area if you don’t see the Manual radio button.
Choose a security setting
Select a security type by clicking the Security Mode drop-down menu.
The most secure option is WPA2, while WEP works better with older computers. It is advised that you employ WPA2. Use WEP if that doesn’t work.
Enter a passphrase
Enter the password you want to use in the Passphrase area. Save Settings by clicking.
Utilize your wireless router to access the internet. You must enter the password you choose to sign up for the wireless network for the first time.
